What to consider before bringing home a puppy?

After some careful consideration and research, you’ve decided that you’re ready to bring home a new family member. First off, congratulations, you are about to embark on one of the most challenging but rewarding journeys. There are many things you should consider when looking for a new addition, such as which breed will best fit your lifestyle, are you prepared finationally as well as emotionally? Do you have the time needed to raise a puppy?

Dogs require a lot; consistant exersice both physically and mentally, grooming, vet visits (sometimes unexpected), food, treats, toys and training classes for both you and your dog. The emotional aspect of raising a puppy, is not to be taken lightly, as they can be very overwhelming in the beginning. Changes will need to be made to your schedule, which means a change in routine in order to accommodate the puppy. You will need to get up (sometimes multiple times) in the night, to take your puppy outside in all weather conditons. They will also need to go out first thing in the morning, to avoid accidents which means no more hitting snooze! Daily training sessions will be required, regardless of what kind of day you’ve had at work. If there are multiple people in the household, everyone must adhere to the same potty, exercise, and sleep schedule in regards to the dog.

A puppy needs guidance, structure, and constant supervision, but best of all love and affection. Owning a dog is a life long commitment, so do your research, plan ahead, and get ready for some changes and challenges, that come with the unconditional love of a new addition!
